A VISUAL GUIDE

Hardware & oil types

A vape is two decisions: the hardware that heats the oil, and the oil inside it. The first five below are formats; the last two are the oils that go in them. Here's the full spectrum.

510 cartridge
Universal threaded tank. Screws onto any 510 battery. The standard.
Disposable pen
All-in-one, pre-charged. Use it, then recycle. Grab-and-go.
PAX pod
Proprietary pod for PAX Era batteries. Sleek, app-connected.
Closed pod
Brand-locked pod systems. Leak-resistant, consistent draw.
Starter kit
Battery plus cartridge bundle. Everything to begin in one box.
Distillate oil
Stripped to near-pure THC. Potent, flavourless unless terpenes are re-added.
Live resin oil
Fresh-frozen extract. Full terpenes, true strain flavour.
WHAT'S IN THE OIL

Distillate vs live resin — the real difference.

Two carts can both say '85% THC' and taste nothing alike. The difference is the oil: distillate is refined to near-pure THC and usually has terpenes added back, while live resin and rosin keep the plant's natural terpenes from fresh-frozen flower. More terpenes means more flavour — and usually a higher price.

SOLVENTLESS vs SOLVENT
Solvents None — heat & pressure (rosin) CO₂, hydrocarbon, ethanol
Terpenes High — strain-true Often re-added
Flavour Full-spectrum, loud Clean to flat
Typical potency 70–85% THC 80–95% THC
Price $$$–$$$$ $–$$$
1
Extract the oil
Cannabis is extracted with CO₂, hydrocarbons, or solventless pressing to pull out the cannabinoids and terpenes.
2
Refine or preserve
Distillate is stripped and purified to near-pure THC; live resin and rosin are kept whole to protect the terpenes.
3
Formulate
The oil is blended to a fillable viscosity. Quality brands skip cutting agents like MCT, PG, or vitamin-E acetate.
4
Fill the hardware
The oil is loaded into a 510 cartridge, pod, or disposable fitted with a ceramic or cotton coil.
5
Test & seal
Provincial rules require lab testing for potency and contaminants before a vape can reach the shelf.
HARDWARE

Why two carts hit so differently.

The coil and battery matter as much as the oil. Ceramic coils and lower voltage protect flavour; a tight or airy airflow changes the draw. Get the hardware right and the same oil tastes better.

Ceramic coil · cleaner flavour, even heat
Voltage · lower = smoother, tastier
Airflow · tight vs airy draw
Battery · charge before first use
510 thread · universal, reusable
SPOTTING QUALITY

Three things to check.

Legal vapes are lab-tested, but quality still varies. Before you buy, scan for these three signals — they separate a clean, flavourful cart from a harsh one.

Lab-tested COA Legal carts are tested for potency & contaminants
Oil type Named 'Live resin' or 'rosin' beats a generic 'distillate'
Additives None Avoid MCT, PG/VG and vitamin-E acetate

FAQ

Vapes, demystified.

The questions we get most from first-timers and switchers.

A 510 cartridge screws onto a reusable 510-threaded battery — you replace just the cart. A disposable is a sealed all-in-one: battery, oil and coil in one unit you recycle when empty. Carts are cheaper long-term; disposables are simpler to start with.

It's oil made from fresh-frozen cannabis instead of dried flower, so it keeps the plant's natural terpenes. It tastes and smells far closer to the live strain than distillate, which is stripped to near-pure THC and often has terpenes re-added.

Usually cold, thick oil or a low battery. Warm the cart in your hand, take slower and gentler pulls, and make sure the battery is charged and set to a lower voltage. Storing carts upright helps prevent flooding the coil.

Start low — around 2.4–3.0V, or the lowest preheat setting. Lower temperatures preserve terpenes and give smoother, tastier hits; high voltage can scorch the oil and taste harsh. Distillate tolerates a little more heat than live resin.

Vitamin-E acetate was linked to the 2019 vaping-illness outbreak in the US illicit market. Legal Canadian cannabis vapes are lab-tested. Buying from a licensed retailer is the simplest way to avoid cutting agents like MCT, PG and VEA.

A 0.5g cart is roughly 80–150 puffs; a 1g cart about double that, depending on draw length and potency. Most people get one to three weeks from a 1g cart.

Yes, from a provincially-licensed retailer and lab-tested. You must be of legal age — 19+ in most provinces, 18+ in Alberta, 21+ in Quebec.
