CANNABIS · SEEDS & HOME-GROW

Seeds.
Grow your own.

Canada lets most households grow up to four plants — and it starts with a seed. From feminized to autoflower, here's what each type means, how a grow unfolds, the legal rules, and where to find seeds cheapest near you.

A VISUAL GUIDE

Seeds & starts

Not all seeds grow the same way. Some are bred to skip the guesswork, some flower on a timer, and clones skip seeds entirely. Here's the spectrum, plus where you'll grow them.

Feminized
Bred to grow bud-producing female plants. No guesswork.
Regular
A natural mix of males and females. For breeders.
Autoflower
Flower on age, not light schedule. Fast and forgiving.
Photoperiod
Flower when light drops to 12 hours. Bigger yields.
Clones
Rooted cuttings of a proven plant. An exact copy.
Indoor strains
Bred for tents and controlled light. Compact, potent.
Outdoor strains
Hardy, high-yield plants for sun and soil.
HOW IT GROWS

Seed to harvest in five stages.

Growing cannabis is patient work, but the cycle is simple. A plant germinates, grows leaves and stems (vegetative), then flowers into the buds you harvest. Indoor gives control; outdoor gives free sunlight and bigger plants. Here's the journey — and how the two setups compare.

INDOOR vs OUTDOOR
Control Total — light, climate Weather-dependent
Yield Moderate per plant Largest plants
Cost Gear + power Sun is free
Harvests Year-round Once, in autumn
Effort Hands-on, daily Seasonal, weather risk
1
Germinate
Coax the seed to sprout a taproot — in water, a damp paper towel, or straight into soil. A few days to a week.
2
Seedling
The first real leaves appear. Gentle light and careful watering — seedlings are fragile and easy to overwater.
3
Vegetative
The plant grows fast, building stems and fan leaves. Plenty of light (18+ hours indoors) and nutrients fuel the structure.
4
Flowering
Triggered by age (auto) or a 12-hour light cycle (photoperiod), buds form and fatten over 7–10 weeks.
5
Harvest & cure
Cut, trim, and dry the buds, then cure them in jars for a few weeks. Curing is where flavour and smoothness are made.
SEED TYPES

Pick the right genetics.

The seed type decides how hands-off the grow is and what you'll harvest. For a first grow, feminized autoflowers are the easy mode.

Feminized · almost all female plants
Regular · males + females, for breeding
Autoflower · flowers on a timer, fast
Photoperiod · needs a light-cycle switch
Clones · exact copy of a mother plant
GROW TIMELINE

How long does it take?

From seed to jar is roughly three to five months, depending on type and setup. Here's the rough breakdown for a typical photoperiod grow.

Germinate 1 week Sprout the taproot
Vegetative 3–8 weeks Build leaves & stems
Flowering 7–10 weeks Buds form & fatten

FAQ

Home-grow, demystified.

The questions we get most from first-time growers.

In most of the country, yes — federal law allows up to 4 plants per household (not per person) from legal seeds or seedlings. The big exception is Quebec, where personal cultivation is prohibited. Always check your province's specific rules before starting.

Federally, up to four plants per dwelling, regardless of how many adults live there. Some provinces add their own conditions, and Quebec bans home growing entirely. It's four per home, not four per grower.

Feminized seeds grow almost exclusively bud-producing female plants. Regular seeds are a natural mix of males and females, used mainly by breeders. Autoflowering seeds flower automatically with age instead of a light-schedule change — the easiest option for beginners.

Roughly three to five months from seed to cured bud. Autoflowers are quickest at around 10–12 weeks total; photoperiod plants take longer but can yield more. Curing afterward adds a few weeks but is worth it.

It's forgiving enough for beginners, especially autoflowers in good soil. The common mistakes are overwatering and too many nutrients. Start with one or two feminized autoflower plants, keep it simple, and learn as you go.

Outdoor is cheapest — sunlight is free — but you get one harvest a year and depend on weather. Indoor costs more in gear and power but gives full control and year-round grows. For a low-cost first try, a couple of plants outdoors in summer is hard to beat.

From a provincially-licensed cannabis retailer — the same stores we index. Buying legal seeds ensures known genetics and keeps your grow compliant. You must be of legal age — 19+ in most provinces, 18+ in Alberta, 21+ in Quebec.
