Pre-rolls.
Rolled, ready, gone.
No grinder, no papers, no mess. But not all pre-rolls are equal — some are ground whole flower, some are shake. Here's how to tell them apart, what the sizes mean, and where to find the best packs near you. (For the high-potency stuff, see the infused pre-rolls guide.)
The kinds of pre-rolls
Pre-rolls range from a half-gram mini for a quick session to a full-gram king for the long haul, sold singly or in packs. Here's the spectrum of standard rolls — for concentrate-laced ones, see the infused pre-rolls guide.
Not all pre-rolls are equal.
The single biggest quality difference is what's inside: ground whole buds, or shake and trim left over from packaging flower. Whole-flower rolls burn slower, taste fuller, and draw more evenly. Here's how a pre-roll comes together — and what to look for.
| Filled with | Ground whole buds | Shake & trimmings |
| Burn | Slow, even | Fast, canoes |
| Pack | Even, springy | Loose or overpacked |
| Flavour | Full, strain-true | Muted, harsh |
| Price | $$–$$$ | $ |
How much, and how many.
Pre-rolls are sold by the gram and by the pack. Smaller rolls and bigger packs are the value plays — here's the quick cheat sheet.
Three quick checks.
You can judge a pre-roll before you light it. These three signals separate a clean, even-burning roll from one that canoes and tastes harsh.

The questions we get most from first-timers and convenience smokers.
It depends on the brand. Better pre-rolls are filled with ground whole buds; cheaper ones use shake and trim — the bits left over from packaging flower. Whole-flower rolls burn slower, taste fuller, and are worth the small premium.
Single-strain rolls give you one cultivar's consistent flavour and effect. Blended rolls mix strains, which can mean a more balanced effect and often a lower price. Neither is 'better' — pick single-strain if you want a known experience, blended if you want value.
Usually an uneven pack or moisture. An evenly packed, properly cured roll burns straight. Rotating it as you smoke and taking gentle, even draws helps. Chronic canoeing points to a loosely or unevenly filled pre-roll.
A standard pre-roll is just rolled flower, so potency matches the strain inside — typically 18–28% THC. For a much bigger hit, infused pre-rolls add concentrate (often 35%+ total THC) — those have their own guide.
A half-gram (or smaller) pre-roll meant for a short, single session — long enough for a dog walk. Minis and multi-packs are a good way to try strains without committing to a full gram.
Keep them cool, dark, and airtight, ideally with a humidity pack. Too dry and they burn harsh and fast; too humid and they won't draw. Most come in sealed tubes or packs that store well as-is.
